Beach

9.5x8.25 in

This is a design of the word: Beach. The top of the B is a sun, the h is the pole of a beach umbrella, and a wave traces the curves of the letters, creating something of a beach scene. I chose these items because they are things that come to mind when I think of the beach.

For this design I used graphite and Sharpies. When given the word "Beach" it took me about 24 tries to find a design that was simple and unique and that I was satisfied with. I knew I wanted the B to become a sun, so I experimented with incorporating different items and designs into the other letters. Water being a critical part of knowing you're on a beach, I added it into the design by having a wave become the curves of the letters, while simultaneously tying them together into one word. I drew the "c" and the "h" close together because I was originally going to make it a beach chair with a little guy sunbathing, but with the interest in keeping the design clean and simple, I decided to tie in a beach umbrella instead. If I were to further this design, I would make the lines thicker to create a bolder design.

FHS

4x4 in

This is a logo I created for Freeport High School. I conformed "FHS" into the space of a circle and wrote the three towns the of the district around the circle. I used maroon, black, and white to color this logo because they are the school's colors. I chose to make this design because when I doodle, I have a tendency to play with font and fit words into certain shapes such as hearts and circles, just to see how I can makes the letters fit together while being confined to fit in the lines of the shape. I also wanted to do a circle shape because I was bored with the boxish style of our school's current logo.

To create this design I used a circle stencil, graphite, colored pencil, and a Sharpie.

The idea to create a circular logo came to me after sketching out several ideas for the logo. I was adding a couple stick-figure students to one of the ideas, when I was reminded of a design I had seen in the past of a bunch of kids holding hands encircling the Earth. Seeing this image in my mind immediately reminded me of my word-shape-sketches. I began by stenciling out my desired circle size and then began drawing in the "FHS" using the same stencil to draw the curved lines of the letters. I created a second line around the first circle to create a thick border between the letters and where I would write the town names. After evenly spacing out each word and all the letters, I traced over all my lines with a fine-point Sharpie and filled in the black border. I then filled in the negative space between the letters inside the circle by burnishing with a maroon colored pencil. Finally, I drew a third circle about a half inch from the town names to create a border for the design. As I filled in the negative space of the circle, I decided to make the lines of the letters thicker to make them stand out more against the dark background. My next steps for this project could be to learn how to turn this logo into stickers to give out to students to show school pride by putting them on their laptops and water bottles and such.
