Advanced Studio Art

Final Reflection

This year while exploring portraiture, I learned the value of having a variety of perspectives and designs to create a visually engaging piece that allows the viewer to explore the subject more in-depth. I've been most successful in creating a variety of works that offer different styles and emotions therefore each portrait is unique to its subject because each time I sat down to start a new piece, I brainstorm how I can make it intriguing to the eye and what different materials and styles I can experiment with. I often struggled to decide who my subject would be for each project, and then once I decided, what characteristics of that person do I want to exemplify? I struggled in this area because the options are endless and it can be hard to pick and choose. I hope to continue to take art classes in college, if I go to UNE I know it's possible to major in Marine Biology while incorporating your studies into art classes such as creating scientific illustrations. Outside of school, I hope that I can tap further into making art that inspires me and that I want to put up all over my walls.

Semester 1 Reflection

Over the course of the first semester of this class, I have learned that concise planning and exploring new processes can make my artwork much more fulfilling. Thus far, I've been most successful with using a variety of materials and experimenting with how I use them, rather than falling back on a material I know well. So far with my sustained investigation, I have never used the same material twice in a row.

This semester I have struggled with finding meaning in my artwork because when I am doing portraits I look at the facts regarding what my subject's face structure looks like and what kind of person I conceive them to be, but because these people are all different, I feel like there's no connection or flow in my portfolio.

My goals for the second semester are to be more in tune with my art when I'm creating it and develop sketches that include a background and room for new ideas. I am also aiming to better my painting skills by experimenting with layering, use tools other than a paintbrush, and improve my time efficiency.
