Assembledge Sculpture

.) What is the subject of your creation? The subject of my creation is is a lobster laying on top of a pair of rocks. I'd sy the setting would also be on the shore of Maine's coast under the sea since lobsters are not commonly found above water.

.) How was the work made? What materials did you use? I created my artwork by first creating an armature of a lobster made of newspaper and tape to make a thick, sturdy base. I also made the rocks out of this material as well. Then using hot glue, and pennies I covered my lobster in it. After I was done I spray painted it black and covered the antennae's with pipe cleaners. Then I covered my rocks in folded print paper and cotton balls. (very time consuming). Once I was done with all 3 seperate pieces I placed the lobster on top of the rock.

.) Why did you choose to create this specific artwork? Describe specific elements and principles you used. How is the work composed/arranged? I chose to create this piece of artwork because I wanted to choose an animal that is close to home. I also wanted to address a subject that I feel very strongly about, which is the environment and the preservation of animals. In my project I used different principles of textures and value. I used texture by adding the pennies and little bits of pieces on my rocks. I also used value by showing the contrast between my rocks and lobster.

.) How did your project evolve? What did you change/revise? From the beginning my first idea of an animal to replicate was a panda, but I didn't really have and idea on how I wanted to incorporate a message into my sculpture. Then, I created a lobster which was perfect because it incorporated the message of how animals in our ecosystems are priceless and we should do everything we can to keep them safe. Also, when creating my animal I was originally going to wrap my rocks in string to show an interesting contrast from hard to soft, but it didn't incorporate the message I wanted to send about how our ecosystem is very fragile, and that the animals have to almost all have a "hard shell" if they want to survive. If I could change anything about my project it would be making the rocks look more like a pair.

.) What is the meaning behind the artwork? What is the Story? The meaning behind my artwork is that everything in our ecosystem and environment is very fragile. Whether it be anything from a rock to a mouse. I displayed this with the fragile materials I used such as the newspaper and cotton balls, also my piece says that every animal on the world is priceless and we need to do whatever we can to save and preserve them.

.) How does your project relate to your life? This project relates to my life because I am constantly interested in our ecosystem and environment. I also have a strong passion the conservation of our environment as well and I centered my project around this.

.) If you think your artwork could be stronger, explain specific ways you might consider revising it in the future. If I could make my project stronger I would probably choose another object to add to my armatures. I do think that my sculptures represented my inner feelings on the environment and ecosystem. But I do think that I could make some more interesting objects to enhance the story I am trying to tell.
