Science
Understand the world by gathering scientific knowledge and skills in the areas of the chemical, the biological, the physical and the psychological sciences.
• Prepare yourself for many careers that rely on scientific information.
• Develop skills in observing, recording, explaining, problem solving and communicating to others scientifically.
NOTE: Students who are considering studying one or more of the sciences in VCE should consider completing one of the specialised science units in Year 10. The units are designed to prepare students for the VCE sciences. Preference will be given to these students when selecting the VCE science units.
SCIENCE PATHWAYS
Year 10 General Science
This unit continues on with the work that was started in Year 9 and builds on it.
Study the cells and know how they are the building blocks for all living things. Look at genes and DNA and understand how what your parents look like, influences what you look like. Debate the pros and cons of genetic engineering. Carry out different types of chemical reactions - learning how to write their chemical equations in words and symbols. Study speed and acceleration and look at why we need to wear a seat belts to save lives in cars.
This unit is a pathway into VCE Science
Year 10 BIOCHEMISTRY
Have you ever wondered what you need to know about developing new medicine and drugs to treat different diseases for a living thing? If you are interested in the periodic table, medicine, or just wants to understand the living world, this program is for you.
Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of living things. In this unit, you will learn about different chemical compounds and the processes that occur in living things. You will build the models of biomolecules, carry out experiments with carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. You will also compare a range of fossil fuels and biofuels as energy sources for society, and carbohydrates, proteins and lipids as fuel sources for the body
Year 10 PHYSICS VCE Pathway Unit
This unit focuses on the study of the physical world. You will attempt to explain how the world works though both theoretical and practical means.
In this unit you will study motion, learn the difference between distance and displacement, calculate speed and understand the concept of acceleration. You will also learn Newton’s laws that explain interaction between objects and learn how energy works. There is also a unit on Electricity that goes through how to make circuits and electrical safety.
If you like science and are serious about your studies then you should consider this unit. It is aimed and preparing students for a successful start to VCE. Word of caution this subject do require a substance level of mathematics.
This unit is a pathway into VCE Physics
Year 10 CHEMISTRY VCE Pathway Unit
Explore the true mysteries of Chemistry. This unit looks at major developments in the story of chemistry, including a study of the periodic table; the internal structure of the atom; the bonding between atoms; polymer chemistry and its importance to everyday lives. Students use the language of chemistry, its symbols and chemical formulas and equations.
If you like science and are serious about your studies then you should consider this unit. It is aimed at preparing students for a successful start to VCE, and you should be prepared to READ, LISTEN and THINK...

Year 10 Biology VCE Pathway Unit
Year 10 Biology focusses on the cell as the structural and functional unit of life. Students explore cellular growth, replacement and death. They become familiar with the key events and regulation of the cell cycle and the processes for cell division, including disruptions to the cell cycle and deviant cell behaviour.
The topics you will study are:
• Cell structure and function
• DNA- Structure and how it influences the way we look
• Protein synthesis-transcription and translation
• How cells divide and grow
This unit of work ties to year 11 & 12 topics that we will study.
Year 10 PSYCHOLOGY - VCE Pathway Unit
In Psychology, you will discover and explore how human beings think, feel and behave. As Psychology is a science with a basis in research, you will be introduced to how to conduct psychological research, and how to use research methods to present your findings.
In this Unit, you will be introduced to a range of psychological topics. You will learn about the structure of the brain and nervous systems, and investigate some mental illnesses. You will explore the different careers within the field of psychology, including areas such as counselling psychology and neuropsychology.
If you like science and are serious about your studies, then you should consider this unit. It is aimed at preparing students for a successful start to VCE, and you should be prepared to READ, LISTEN AND THINK...

Year 10 Human Biology
Human Biology gives students a chance to explore what it is to be human-how the human body works and the different systems working together. Students examine how homeostatic mechanisms in animals help maintain their internal environment within a narrow range of tolerance levels, and consider malfunctions in homeostatic mechanisms.
The topics you will study are:
• Homeostasis and stimulus response model
• Regulation of body temperature, blood glucose and water balance in animals by homeostatic mechanisms, including stimulus-response models, feedback loops and associated organ structures
• apoptosis as a regulated process of programmed cell death
• mutations
Year 10 Medical Science
Students focus on the immune response of organisms to specific pathogens. Students examine unique molecules called antigens and how they illicit an immune response, the nature of immunity and the role of vaccinations in providing immunity. They explain how technological advances assist in managing immune system disorders and how immunotherapies can be applied to the treatment of other diseases.
The topics you will study are:
• Types of pathogens
• Innate and adaptive immune response
• Inflammatory response and allergic response
• Different modes of transmission and measures to control transmission.
