Studying a language opens many doors for you in terms of further study, your future career and social opportunities. It increases your chances of entry into the university course of your choice, widens your career choices and provides you with a useful life skill.
In today’s global world, the ability to communicate in another language is a real plus and gives you a definite advantage over other applicants for jobs, promotions and transfers.
This is especially true in areas such as commerce and trade, medicine and science, law, telecommunications, banking and finance, hospitality and tourism and in international companies.
Understanding, speaking, reading and writing anotherlanguage provides you with the opportunity of meeting and relating well to people from a huge range of rich and varied cultures around the world, both overseas and in Australia.
Travelling is so much easier and more common these days and it is not just for pleasure; many people work and study overseas. You will have so much more fun if you can join in with the ‘locals’.
In Year 10 you will extend the knowledge and skills you have already acquired in Year 7 to 9 language classes. Therefore, unless special approval is gained, you are required to have successfully completed two units of Year 9 Language. If you only choose one Language unit you must choose LT26 or LT27.
NOTE: Students who are considering studying a language in VCE need to choose two units of their Language in Year 10. Special consideration will be given to these students and they will be able to negotiate their elective choices during course counselling.
