Mathematics during year 10 at Roxburgh College is aimed at building a solid foundation for students who wish to continue to do Mathematics subjects in their VCE and VCE-VM courses in years 11 and 12.
Year 10 Foundation Maths
Year 10 General Maths
Year 10 Maths Methods
Year 10 Maths Methods Bridging (MMB) Elective
Students who wish to develop their ‘real life’ Mathematics, who perhaps are not planning to do any Maths subjects in their final years will study a subject designed to develop the fundamentals of Mathematics to ensure their success when employed or completing an apprenticeship. Topics include; Business and Financial Maths, Statistics and Measurement.
Students will develop the necessary skills and understandings surrounding Business Mathematics, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Matrices. The course will mirror the General Maths course in year 11 and 12.
Students wishing to complete Maths Methods in year 11 and 12 will need to complete this subject as it is designed to ensure all students are fully prepared for the rigors and challenges that are to come. The topics will mirror those of Year 11 Methods including; Polynomials, Irrational Numbers, Trigonometry and Probability.
Parents and students are advised that there will be limited space in these classes & that students will be selected on their abilities as demonstrated by their work in semester 1.
There is an opportunity for some exceptional students to begin their VCE in year 10 by studying Year 11 Maths Methods. Students who complete this subject will be expected to do year 10 Maths Methods in Semester 2 at the same time and will complete Further Maths (a year 12 subject) in year 11. This subject also allows students to consider Specialist Maths in year 12. Entry into year 11 Maths Methods is by applications. Students wishing to apply must put together a portfolio outlining not only their Mathematical ability but also demonstrating their commitment to learning. It is preferable that they completed MA23 in Year 9
