Why study a Language in VCE?
Studying a language at VCE level opens many doors for you in terms of further study, your future career and social opportunities. It increases your chances of entry into the University course of your choice, widens your career choices and provides you with a useful life skill.
In today’s global world, the ability to communicate in another language is a real plus and gives you a definite advantage over other applicants for jobs, promotions and transfers. This is especially true in areas such as commerce and trade, medicine and science, telecommunications, banking and finance, hospitality and tourism and in international companies.
Understanding, speaking, reading and writing another language provides you with the opportunity of meeting and relating well to people from a huge range of rich and varied cultures around the world, both overseas and in Australia. Travelling is so much easier and more common these days and not just for pleasure; many people work and study overseas. You have so much more fun if you can join in with the “locals”.
Which Language can you study in VCE?
Roxburgh College offers VCE Units 1, 2, 3 & 4 in:
Turkish
• You may choose to study more than one language at VCE level.
• If you can speak, read and write another language, why not make the most of a skill you already possess?
A large number of languages are available at VCE level through Distance Education, for example, Spanish, Arabic, and German, and you can study these during the week at school. There are also many languages available through the VSL (Saturday morning school) and other Community Language Schools. For most native speakers, this is an excellent opportunity to increase their ATAR score.
What do you study? What is assessed?
In VCE Language will extend the knowledge and skills you have already acquired in Years 7 to 10. Therefore, unless special approval is gained, you are required to have successfully completed two Units of Year 10 Languages’. Although students enter VCE Languages with varied experiences and competence, the Study Design promotes the development and improvement of all students.
