This is a two-year course aimed at students who wish to pursue a career as a Laboratory Technician. The course has a Units 1 - 4 sequence over two years. In Year 12, students complete Units 3 & 4. They will complete SACs and an end-of-year external examination to contribute to their ATAR. This course has a pathway on to a variety of employment opportunities, including;
Mineral Assay Laboratory Assistant, Biomedical Laboratory Assistant, Water Quality Laboratory Assistant, Laboratory Assistant, School Laboratory Technician, Biological Testing Technical Assistant, Environmental Testing Technical Assistant, Environmental Field Assistant (Sample Testing),Construction Materials Testing Technical Assistant, Polymer Testing Laboratory Assistant, Food Testing Laboratory Assistant, Dairy Factory Laboratory Assistant
Year 1 (Units 1 & 2):
BSBCMM211 Apply communication skills
MSL913004 Plan and conduct laboratory/field work
MSL922002 Record and present data
MSL943004 Participate in laboratory or field workplace safety
MSL953005 Receive and prepare samples for testing
MSL954007 Obtain rep. samples with sampling plan
MSL973025 Perform basic tests
Year 2 (Units 3 & 4):
MSL973026 Prepare working solutions
MSL973017 Perform techniques that prevent cross contamination
MSL973028 Perform microscopic examination
MSL933009 Contribute to achievement of quality objectives
MSL973015 Prepare culture media
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
Students will need to have the following equipment to participate in the subject. Failure to bring the required equipment will not allow students to participate in the course fully and put them at risk of not being able to meet the outcomes.
Laptop Computer:
A Laptop capable of running Microsoft 365 (Microsoft 365 is available to all Victorian Government School Students from the Department of Education)
