ABSTRACT
This project will discuss the practice of positive self-affirmations and the impact it has on self-esteem. Put simply, positive affirmations are positive phrases or statements used to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts. It is hypothesized that positive self-affirmations improve self-esteem. In this study, over the course of the three days, 39 participants took the Robson Self Concept Questionnaire (SQC) as a baseline, practiced the ‘Three Compliments Journal’, and took the Robson SCQ again. The study found that after participants practiced a form of positive self-affirmation, in this case the ‘Three Compliments Journal’, 84 percent of them scored higher on the Robson SCQ, while 16 percent of the participants' scores stayed the same as the baseline and none of the scores decreased. This information validated the hypothesis that practicing positive self-affirmations improves self-esteem and provides reason for positive self-affirmations to be integrated into daily life.
