ABSTRACT
“Impact on Student Learning: Second-Grade Learners Review and Extend Addition Fact Strategies Knowledge” by Bella Galli details a unit lesson plan to study and determine the level of proficiency of second-grade students’ abilities to add and subtract within twenty fluently, explain their thinking when adding and subtracting, determine whether the number of a group of objects is odd or even, recognize multiple names for the same number, and utilize various addition and subtraction strategies and models. Prior to a series of mathematics lessons, students were given a pre-assessment, which focused on using addition and subtraction fact strategies to solve problems, counting up and identifying dollar values, comprehending and answering number stories, classifying even and odd numbers, and providing equivalent names for the same number. The results from the pre-assessments were exercised to create and teach twelve lessons, during which teacher modeling, guided practice, videos, interactive games and activities, and small group work were applied. Based on mentor teacher feedback and formative assessment through observation of students’ in-class work during Math Workshop Rotations, as well as daily homework assignments and weekly quiz game reviews, lessons were adjusted as necessary. At the conclusion of the unit, a post-assessment was administered. Results of the post-assessment in comparison to the results of the pre-assessment established that the students were able to achieve mastery of the Common Core mathematical standards and key skills; these students’ final scores and levels of understanding exhibited that the lessons had allowed the students to have positive learning experiences and grow in their knowledge.
