Now it's time to really get into computer systems - quite literally!
We'll be working together to first take apart some old computers. I'll show you how to remove the different components and how to store them.
Then we'll have a go at building our own. Again, I'll take you all through the build process in an order that makes things as simple as possible.
While building you'll also be taking photos as each stage. You'll need these later.
If you're keen to have another go yourself, this video is great for teaching you all you need to know! It could be handy for remembering what you did too.
What input and output devices will we need for our computer? A keyboard, mouse, and monitor of course.
Find where these connect on your computer and plug them in.
An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language. Without an operating system, a computer is useless.
Watch the video below for what an Operating System does
Because these are old computers we want to install a nice simple Operating System that won't need too much processing power.
We're going to use Chrome OS Flex to do this.
I'll walk you through how we can download and install this on your computers.
Your job now is to create a "step by step guide to building a computer system."
Using the photos you took, create a guide that someone could follow to be able to build their own computer.
You should explain each step in enough detail that someone could do it themselves.
Remember to include any important safety or handling tips.
Make this guide simple to follow - a number system often helps.
You'll also need to go back to your "what's inside a computer" guide and add a page for your input and output devices, and one for your Operating System.
