Welcome to the start of this unit standard! This course is all about developing the essential skills you need to navigate the Internet effectively, efficiently, and responsibly—which are skills you'll use for the rest of your life.
This is a Level 1 standard and is worth 2 credits.
To gain these credits, you will learn and be assessed on three main outcomes here:
Outcome 1: Demonstrate Knowledge of the Internet
This section focuses on the basic building blocks of the web. You'll learn the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web, understand what a URL (website address) actually means, and identify the different parts of a web address (like the domain name and the country code).
Outcome 2: Launch and Close a Web Browser and Use Browser Controls
This outcome is about mastering the tools you use to view the Internet—your web browser. You'll learn how to start and close the browser correctly and use all of its most important controls.
Outcome 3: Use Search Engines to Find Information on the Internet
This is the most critical skill! You will learn how to go beyond basic searching to find exactly what you need. This includes using simple techniques (like exact "quotation marks" searches) and advanced operators (like AND, OR, NOT, or searching within a specific site or file type). Most importantly, you will learn to check the Provenance of a website, which means evaluating it for Credibility, Timeliness, Verification, and being cautious about AI-generated results.
