This page will take you step by step through how to create your first music tracks. Make sure you watch the videos to help you learn each step.
We have a license for SoundTrap which will provide all of the tools you will need to create your own original music.
SoundTrap is easier to use that many other DAWs but still provides all you need for Level 1 and 2 outcomes.
Watch these short videos to learn how it works.
Speak to Matua Matt to get a license for SoundTrap before you begin...
Four minute video and you'll be making your first complete track using loops! Brave enough to recoed vocals? Ask me for the mic!
This next one introduces adding a few chords and bass - now you're creating something original!
Use the Songwriting Template to map out your track. Decide on your Genre and the Idea/Concept (e.g., "The Stress of Exams" or "Summer Arrival"). List the Elements of Music you will focus on: What is the Structure (Intro > Build > Drop)? What Timbre (sounds) will you use to match the vibe? And so on...
Open Soundtrap and enter the Studio. Create a new "Music" project.
Setup up the overall form of your track using the labels row. Just stick to 8 bar sections for this first track.
Explore the Loops Library (the purple music note icon). Filter by Genre and Instrument to find three core loops (Drums, Bass, and Synth/Keys) that fit your planning template.
Add your drums by choosing from the Sound Library. Stick to one overall rhythm but vary the dynamics by adding or removing elements or even the whole drums.
Instead of just using a loop, you could try to create your own beat. Add a new track and select Drum Machine. Program a "Pattern" that matches your genre. Experiment with Velocity to ensure the beat feels natural and has "impact."
Start by creating the harmony. Add a new track then create a 3 or 4 chord loop that matches the melody. Use the Chords feature in the piano roll to do this.
Then add a simple but catchy melody. Add another track for your Melody (e.g., a Lead Synth or Flute). In the Piano Roll, draw in a single-note lead line that "sits" on top of your chords.
Ensure the melody follows the same Key as your harmony so they don't clash.
No need to record vocals or find samples for this first project. Just use those that are already built into SoundTrap.
Experiment with different ones, ensuring they match the key and tonality of your track.
This is where you engineer the "Story" of the song. Use the Edit tools to split and move your loops. Create a "Build-up" by gradually adding instruments, then create a "Drop" where the drums and bass are at their loudest. Use Automation to fade the volume in or out.
Use the Mixer panel to balance your tracks. Adjust the Pan (left/right) so the instruments don't sound crowded. Apply Effects like Reverb or Delay to give the "Atmosphere" you planned in your blueprint.
Ensure the Master Volume doesn't go into the "Red" (clipping).
Listen to your track from start to finish. Once you are happy, click Save, then go to File > Export > Export Project to MP3/WAV. Check the final file to ensure the structure flows correctly and the audio is clear.
Now go share it far and wide!!
