Digital technologies are the digital devices, systems, software, and resources that people use to create, store, use, and manage anything digital.
They are transforming how we live and are in every aspect of our lives; shaping our homes and our workplaces, changing the way that we interact with each other, allowing access to huge amount of information and entertainment, solving complex problems, and offering new ways to live our everyday lives. As a young person you've been born straight into this digital world!
Digital Technologies at Raglan Area School is all about supporting young people to develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills not only to use digital technologies but to understand, design, and build digital solutions
Digital Technologies teaches two key technological areas, computational thinking, and designing and developing digital outcomes.
Understanding the science, technology, and processes that lie behind digital technologies
How we can instruct computers what to do (programming)
How we can apply this knowledge
Solving real-world problems (needs, issues, or opportunities)
Using Digital Technologies for designing and developing quality, fit-for-purpose (and cool) digital solutions to these problems
In Digital Technologies for NCEA (Years 11-13), the two technological areas are expanded into four Big Ideas. These are:
The discipline of Digital Technologies embodies whanaungatanga. Outcomes are made by people, for people, within cultural, social, and environmental contexts
Digital outcomes are created for a purpose by following established processes
The discipline of Digital Technologies embodies auahatanga. Outcomes solve problems and enhance and expand human possibilities
All digital technologies are underpinned by algorithms and computer science principles
