MindMup

Graphic Organizer

Mindmup is a mind map or graphic organizer used to brainstorm ideas, explore concepts and create a better understanding of relationships and connections. Mind maps start with a central theme, then adds ideas which radiate out from the center.

Open MindMup

Open your OUSD Google Drive account.

Click + New.

Scroll over More and click MindMup 2.0 for Google Drive.

Name Your MindMup

A new tab will open with MindMup.

Rename your MindMup.


This can be done by filling in the blue “node” in the middle of the page or in the upper left corner where it says An untitled mindmap. This one is named MindMup Tutorial.

Turn On Autosave

Click File/Turn On Autosave. This will ensure the safety of your work.

Click TURN ON.

Set Up MindMup

Click View/Map theme/Top-down Standard. This setting is popular amongst our students because it looks like a family tree.

Add Nodes

Select the blue node. A dotted line will appear, indicating that the node is selected.

While selected, hit enter/return to create a “child” node. Add text.

Create more child nodes by selecting the parent node and hitting enter/return.

To move and organize, click and drag a node (look for the black arrow).

  • Templates could be made ahead of time.

  • Placeholder nodes (introduction, body and conclusion) could be created to guide students.

  • Make a copy of the template for each student or assign through Google Classroom.

Export to Google Docs

Click File, Download as, Outline.

Use the settings shown here. Click EXPORT.

Click SAVE TO DRIVE.

Name your outline and click UPLOAD.

Click OPEN to view in Google Docs.

Click Open with Google Docs.

Now you are ready to write using your outline!
