Text-to-Speech (Select-to-Speak)

Chromebook's text-to-speech, also called Select-to-Speak, allows you to choose items on the screen and have them read aloud using the in-built screen reader technology.

Setting Up Select-to-Speak

Login to Chromebook using your OUSD Chrome account.

Click the Time widget in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Click the Settings icon.

Click Advanced, then Accessibility.

Click Manage accessibility features in the right-hand panel.

Scroll down to Text-to-speech and click the toggle switch next to Enable select-to-speak to turn dictation on (blue is on, gray is off).

A Select-to-speech icon will appear on the bottom right of your screen.

Close Settings.

Select Open select-to-speak settings to adjust Voice, Rate, Pitch, and Volume.

Using Select-to-Speak

Depending on your keyboard, you can press the Search key or the Launcher key for some shortcuts.

Both keys work the same.

Several ways to select the text you’d like to hear:

  • Press and hold the Search key and select a line of text.

  • Press and hold the Search key and drag the pointer over an area of the screen.

  • Highlight the text and press the Search key + s.

Your Chromebook will read the section aloud and each word will be highlighted.

To stop Select-to-speak while it’s reading, press Ctrl or the Search key.

  • With navigation controls, you can pause and play, adjust speed and skip lines of text.
