Closed Captions

In Google Chrome Account

While closed captioning for education is crucial to prevent disability discrimination, there are many additional benefits. The first of which is that captions help all students better understand and focus on educational videos. Captions also clarify the dialogue when the speaker has an accent.

Teachers and students can turn on closed captions in their Chrome account. This option does not work using full-screen, but the video could be zoomed-in using the pinch method (on a Mac, pinch with two fingers to zoom in or out).

Setting Up Closed Captions

Open Chrome browser. Make sure you are using your OUSD Chrome account.

Click the three dots on the upper right side of the window.

Click Settings.

On the left side of your screen, click Advanced.

Click Accessibility.

Using Closed Captions

Open a video, like this advisory video. When you play the video, closed captioning will appear.

The closed caption box can be moved to a different part of the screen (click and drag) or closed by clicking the x.

Once closed, the closed caption box will not appear again unless you refresh the page.

The arrow at the bottom of this box expands to show more lines. Clicking on it again will collapse the box.

Closed Captions in YouTube

Most YouTube videos have closed captions built-in (bottom right corner of the video).

Look for the cc icon.
