Speech Recognition

Enabling system-wide dictation on your Chromebook can make your life a bit more efficient. With this system enabled, you can speak to your Chromebook and whatever app you have open will turn that speech into text.

Setting Up Dictation

Login to Chromebook using your OUSD Chrome account.

Click the Time widget in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Click the Settings icon.

Click Advanced, then Accessibility.

Click Manage accessibility features in the right-hand panel.

Scroll down to Keyboard and text input and click the toggle switch next to Enable dictation (speak to type) to turn dictation on (blue is on, gray is off).

Using Dictation

When the cursor is in an area where you can enter text, click the microphone button and start talking.

Speak in a clear voice. The words will appear on the screen as you speak.

Headphones/earbuds with mic are helpful in noisy environments.

See Voice Typing Picture Instructions to assist in student training.

Add common punctuation marks by saying comma, period, question mark or exclamation point.

Dictation will end automatically if you stop talking, or you can click the microphone button again to turn it off.

  • Think before you speak.

  • Enunciate.

  • Add punctuation.

  • Practice (don't give up if it doesn't work right away).
