So far this year, we have been learning about geometry and algebra. We have been specifically working on, dilation, translations, reflections, rotations, congruent shapes, seeing if shapes are similar, and more. We have also been working a lot on algebra, and variables, especially one step equations and equations with variables which is some re cap of last year. A lot ofthe algebra many of us knew, and are just going over again and practicing a bit more.
What is the "Myth" of the math brain, or math person?
The myth that you are either a math person, or you aren't. That there are only two categories to be in, even though if you look at graphs there are almost always more than two categories.
Why are mistakes important in math class?
Mistakes are important in class because your brain, actually improves and grows if you make mistakes. Even if you don't realize you are making mistakes, and even when you do, your brain is growing from those mistakes even if you correct them or not.
How do you feel about math right now?
I don't really like math, but I think the TED talk kind of made math sound better. I also feel better about making mistakes in math because of the article we read.
What are some specific, actionable steps you can take to improve your math Mindset this year?
Understand that its ok to make mistakes in math, and that its ok to ask for help and to communicate with other around me.
We sometimes get our workbook checked to make sure that we are following along with the class. I got a meets on this because I always follow along when we are doing something as a class, and on my own.
Our Unit one workbook was about angles, rigid transformations, congruent figures, translations, rotations, reflections, and more. I got a meets on my workbook because I did everything we were doing in class, and always participated in activities in our workbook.
My goal for my learning performance on the next unit workbook is to be more organized and have better handwriting. This is my goal because my main goal for this year was to be organized, and when I am organized I like to learn more and understand better.
Topics: Some of the topics that we have been talking about in the second unit are dilation, similarity, and slope. A dilation is when you make a shape bigger or small using a scale factor. Similar shapes are shapes that are similar, and congruent shapes are always similar but similar shapes aren't always congruent. Slope is measuring the steepness of a line.
In my workbook, I received a meets because I always followed along with what we were doing in class and made sure I got the right answers, or understood the answer, by asking questions and paying attention.
I received a meets on my math test (13.5/ 16) because some questions I got part of it right, and some questions I got part of it wrong so I would either go up by .5 or down by .5.
I can continue doing well in the next unit by following along in our math book, and studying for tests. I can also ask questions If I am confused to help clarify things that are confusing.
This quiz talked a lot about slope and proportional relationships in slope. It also had questions about how fast or how much money someone has, and things like that.
I got an exceeds on this test because my group got all of the questions right (It was a group test I worked with Maddie, Alyssa, and Rhyse.
I received a meets on my workbook because I followed along with what we were doing, and met the standards.
A goal I will set for myself is to make sure I understand why my group got a specific answer, to make sure I would get the questions right if I had done this test alone. For my workbook goal, I just want to get meets again and fallow along with what we are doing in class.
Every week we get assigned Delta Math as homework. We work on things we do in class, to help us better understand the unit and the lessons. I have completed 6 lessons so far in 8th grade, and I have gotten to 100% on all of them.
This was our unit 4 workbook check. I recieved a meets- beacuse I was only missing a few questions, however I was gone for some things so I couldn't re do what was missing. But I followed along with what we were doing in class so I got a meets.
My overall grade level and score in math was grade 7 (506), this means that at the beginning of the year I scored in 7 grade math. The national norm I got (Or percentile) was 64, meaning I scored in the 64th percentile. The four domains that I scored were, 7th grade, 7th grade, 7th grade, and early 8th grade. I scored the highest in my geometry and scored the lowest in number and operations, Algebra and Algebraic thinking, and measurement and data.
By the end of the year I-Ready test I want to score 8th grade or end of 8th grade In every category. I will do this by practicing math, and if I get confused about something, I can ask questions to help me better understand.
This assignment covered systems of equations, graphing systems of equations, writing equations, solving systems of equations with substitution, ect.
I got an exeeds because I did the exeeds section, which isn't required. That section was a lot about substitution, with only three equations.
A goal I can set for myself on my next math assignments is to remember to show my work, and when I do, make it easy to read and understand.
For this quiz, we answered questions all about functions including if something was or wasn't a function. I received a meets on this quiz, or a 5/5 because I got all of the questions correct.
A goal I can set for myself is to continue to receive meets and get correct answers by paying attention in class.
