I unfortunately missed the Socratic seminar, however I still got graded on the Socratic seminar prep sheet. On the prep sheet, I did receive and exceeds, as I wrote large paragraphs, quoted the book, and added historical facts and quotes. There were three required responses, but also one smaller section for any questions or additional notes that you might have (Which even though I wasn't there I still filed out). I filled the whole box almost every response, which is one of the reasons that I got an exceeds.
This is our just Mercy Readers Log, which is where we write down what we read. Every week, we read certain chapters of just Mercy, when we are done with that we write a summery of that chapter, find a quote that shows an injustice, and explain why it shows an injustice. I received a meets + on this, because I wrote things in depth and did what was expected of me.
This was the initial research for the topic that we wanted to do, where we researched our top two choices and wrote a summary about it.
My first choice was The Evolution of Protesting through the History of the US. I wanted this topic because I liked that it included different things such as, racial injustice, women's rights, reproductive health concerns, gun control, and more. I also liked that this topic allowed me to talk about our first amendment, free speech. It also involves different viewpoints, which I would like to hear more about.
My second choice was the US Incarceration Rates Compared to other Countries. I wanted this choice because I thought it was very interesting to see how many more people we out in prison and jail compared to other countries, and why. I learned that jails and prisons are involved with making money for companies, which shouldn't be allowed. Also how we arrest people for minor crimes such as, unpaid fees or tickets, attempted crimes, not showing up in court, minor drug offenses, and more.
I thought both of these topics were very interesting, and I would have been fine with either one. Though I ended up getting my first choice, The Evolution of Protesting through the History of the US.
For our TED talk exhibition we first needed to find four reliable resources, and research our topic further. However, this document is still a work in progress, and has not been graded. I also chose to do the extension, which is a written notes worksheet where I go even deeper into my topic. I picked five subtopics, Womens rights, Immigration and Migration rights, gun control, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights.
I received a meets on my TED talk, (Oral Presentation) and an exceeds on my research, and slides.
I learned a lot about injustices and specifically about protests and how people protest in an effort to make changes and stop injustices.
I learned a lot about protesting and also how to set up a TED talk.
For my overall TED talk (Oral Presentation) I got a meets because I met the standards, I think I would have gotten an exeeds if I had memorized my script.
I got an exeeds on my slides because I added a lot of visuals that connected to my topic, and added some slides.
I got an exeeds on my research because I exceeded the expectation, and added a lot of research and paragraphs for my sources.
My goal for my next presentation I want to memorize my script, and aim for an exeeds.
