The impact of technology on lifestyle can be explored through 3 contexts: technologies and the family, technologies and the community, technology and the workplace.
THE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON LIFESTYLE: FAMILY
The introduction of labour saving devices such as washing machines, dishwashers, dryers and vacuum cleaners has had a positive impact on household technology. Cooking utensils and gadgets as well as online shopping have also had positive impacts by freeing up time to allow multiple commitments and enable social and emotional wellbeing benefits. There are also detrimental impacts of these household technologies economically and physically.
Information technology enables connection and interaction between immediate and extended family members as well as the ability to capture memories, access information, engage in social media and manage routines. Positive impacts occur via interpersonal relationships within families through email, text and social media to share news, stories, photos and experiences, especially with those overseas. It can be negative due to unhealthy habits being built up through constant use, reliance on the internet & desires to keep up with the latest technology trends. (iphones)
Entertainment technology can provide relaxation and recuperation. Tablets, game consoles, computers, smart phones, sound systems, MP3 players, DVD's etc can be used for movies, games audio books, music etc. Healthy engagement can be positive for social and interpersonal relationships within the family by improving social connections. Overuse can lead to negative impacts by affecting relationships due to time spent on devices, developing obsessions, cognitive affects, distraction, finiancial debts.
