How do the characteristics of individuals affect access to services in Rural and Remote communities?
Characteristics of Rural and Remote Families: SCLAGED
Socioeconomic status: This can vary. Some rural properties are worth a great of money and others are very low. Cost of housing is generally lower than urban locations but cost of food and petrol is often higher
Culture: Individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures could be living in rural and remote areas of Australia. for example, people from the UK or Europe could be on rural placement as labourers or doctors as part of their training to get accredited in Australia.
Language spoken: Individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures could be living in rural and remote areas of Australia. There would need to be support available in different languages to accommodate this diversity.
Age: This will vary amongst different communities.
Gender: Both males and females are associated with living in rural and remote communities
Education level: This can vary. Farms today are very much a business enterprise and may require a University degree by some of the employees. Some of this population may be lower educated and work as itinerant staff
Disability type: High incidence of suicide amongst rural males. This may be a result of mental illness. Also farm machinery accidents could contribute to physical disabilities.
For each of the factors SCLAGED - come up with an additional example TTYP and discuss. Then share with the group
Resources:
Knowledge: They may not know what is available to help and support them. However, if internet service is available then they would have more access to what is available
Money: Lack of money may contribute to rural people not accessing resources and not seeing it as priority when money is tight.
Energy: It may be too draining for people to access resources and they may lack the enthusiasm and motivation to do so.
Time: May not have the available time as they have to spend so much time on the rural property trying to make ends meet.
For each of the factors KMET - come up with an additional example TTYP and discuss. Then share with the group
Aspects of the service: COLES
Confidentiality: Small town mentality may be an issue..... everyone knows everyone and they may feel uncomfortable knowing that their privacy has been invaded.
Opening hours: May not suit if the rural family has to travel a long distance to access the service.
Location: May be located in town and the distance is too great for them to access.
Staffing: Staff may not be stable as people often move around in rural areas. As a result, people may not feel comfortable seeing new staff often
For each of the factors COLS - come up with an additional example TTYP and discuss. Then share with the group
