Explore ONE example of what homeless people have done to try to improve community attitudes and assess the impact this has had on the wellbeing of the group. Look at the edrolo lesson "giving back" example attached.
Homeless have and do, make contributions to the community. Recognizing the contributions that this group has directly made to the community around them will influence attitudes towards the group.
Contributions within the community:
At first glance, many people would think that homeless people do not make much of a contribution to the community. Once we reflect we can see that homeless people contribute to the community through creating community awareness, busking and providing entertainment to the community, sharing stories of heartache and resilience with the countless volunteers across the country in soup kitchens, hostels and through services like Vinnies Van.
Homeless people can also make a significant contribution to the social choices made by non-homeless people through donating unwanted clothing to charity, donating time and money to charitable organisations that support homeless people, reducing waste and appreciation of respect for money, and by having respect for local spaces and parks that are inhabited by homeless people.
Student Activity: Think, Pair, Share
Use the same format as the example above and come up with your own example of how the homeless contribute to the community.
1 Draw up the table in your books and start by working in pairs to come up with an idea. Brainstorm it together and edit your table.
2 After you complete your table, join together with another pair to listen to what they have written. Use this information to create a second example in your books.
3. Share the information and discuss as a class all of the various example. Create a third example in your books after listening to the class
