Students learn about: specific needs of the group
Students learn to: Identify and prioritise the specific needs of the group, justify the TWO most significant needs for the group and discuss the implications if these are not met
Specific Needs:
There are issues of concern for LGBTQIA+ community including satisfaction of needs and access to services. The satisfaction of needs is an issue of concern. These specific needs have to be prioritised and justified and all of them have implications if these are not met.
Rank the needs from most needed (priority needs) 1-4
Describe TWO needs from the list that you believe to be the most important for LGBTQIA+ people and why? Edrolo example here.
Watch Edrolo for their explanation of priorities.
It is important for members of the LGBTQIA+ community not to feel pressured to 'decide on' or disclose their identity.
Denial or self-hatred due to internalised homophobia, internalised transphobia &/or the lack of acceptance of their own sexual orientation or gender identity may cause LGBTQIA+ people to lose their sense of identity. The lack of acceptance by family &/or friends or the disapproval of LGBTQIA+ identities in certain cultures & religions may also lead to a poor sense of self & social isolation.
Finding allies, caring friends or other queer people can help LGBTQIA+ people accept & celebrate themselves for who they are.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
Due to the specific health needs of some people within the LGBTQIA+ community as well as discrimination/abusewhich affects both the need for & access to certain physical & mental healthcare, LGBTQIA+ people have unique health needs.
Trans-specific medical care, such as gender affirmation surgery & hormones, is a healthcare need specific to people with non cis gender identities & can be difficult to receive due to both discrimination & access limitations.
A lack of safe sex education outside the bounds of heteronormativity may also increase the risk of STI's in the LGBTQIA+ community, especially among young adults.
The discrimination, underrepresentation& abuse experienced by & inflicted upon the LGBTQIA+ community has devastating mental health impacts, with those in the LGBTQIA+ community having higher rates of depression & suicide than the general population.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
Difficulties may arise for people in the LGBTQIA+ community when attending school as high-school students are of the age when gender & sexual identity is being explored, which could lead to difficulties surrounding sense of self as well as bullying & harassment. Educational facilities should aim to create a safe environment for all students with anti-discrimination& anti-bullying policies.
A lack of safe sex education outside the bounds of heteronormativity may also cause the exclusion of certain students, causing them to seek advice & information from informal sources, such as friends or the internet, & increase the risk of STI's in the LGBTQIA+ young adult community.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
Being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community does not affect the jobs a person is capable of or their performance at work. The need for employment for this particular group is similar to that of the general population; however, in some cases, there may be some difficulties surrounding employment.
Despite anti-discrimination laws being in place to prevent workplace discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation, they cannot always be enforced as discrimination by employees can be implicit or hidden.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
Due to discrimination, harassment & abuse, LGBTQIA+ people value spaces in which they can feel safe & secure.
When LGBTQIA+ people don't have access to a safe environment to be their authentic self they often chose not to 'come out' for fear of harassment or lack of acceptance, causing them to live in fear and/or isolation.
Queer spaces, including LGBTQIA+ support groups & queer friendships, or spaces with zero tolerance for homophobia & transphobia, are often the places where people in the LGBTQIA+ community feel the safest.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
It is often perceived that this need is easily met by the LGBTQIA+ community; however, LGBTQIA+ are more likely to be homeless than cisgendered/heterosexualpeople, often due to being shut out by a bigoted family or the lack of employment due to workplace discrimination.
What are the implications if this need is not met?
