LESSON OBJECTIVE: To learn about positive influences the group has on community attitudes
SUCCESS CRITERIA: Explore ONE example of what the group has done to try to improve community attitudes and assess the impact this has had on the wellbeing of the group.
Positive Influences on Community Attitudes
A positive social environment has evolved as a result of LGBTQIA+ people contributing within the community and has led to an improvement in community attitudes of the group, thus impacting the wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ people.
Contributions within the Community
LGBTQIA+ peoples have contributed to society, art & culture both now & throughout history, making a significant mark on music, fashion & popular culture. The shame, secrecy & illegality of LGBTQIA+ identities & orientations throughout history, as well as the lack of modern terminology, makes it almost impossible to know which talented &/or famous historical figures would have been part of the LGBTQIA+ community if it had existed in their time. Despite this, there are many individuals who are widely acknowledged to have been queer by according to our modern understanding, such as artists Leonardo da Vinci & Michelangelo & authors Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf & Emily Dickinson.
In more recent history, many subcultures & trends began through the self expression of queer musicians & their fans, with artists such as David Bowie, Elton John, Boy George (Culture Club), Freddie Mercury (Queen) & George Michael (Wham!) making significant contributions to the music & fashion industries. With both the progression of LGBTQIA+ rights & feminism in recent years, the music industry has become more gender & LGBTQIA+ inclusive, with artists like Hayley Kiyoko, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, King Princess, Girl in Red, Janelle Monae, Clairo & Sam Smith helping define a generation.
Explore these resources for more information on the LGBTQIA+ people & groups who have made significant contributions to society... Choose one person to explain to the class the contributions they have made to the wider community
ACTIVITIES:
Members of LGBTQIA+ make numerous contributions to society daily, however, because they do not publicise their sexuality, people around them would not consider that they are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
LGBTIQ+ community also contributes through:
Promotion of human rights (wear it purple Day)
Challenging conservative opinions
Advocating for safe sex practices
Contributions to the arts/sports/entertainment
Organising and supporting community based support services.
Financial contributions to the economy (Pink dollar) e.g. tourist income with Mardi Gras and other pride events.
