Smart Technology

Year 9 Chaucer have been studying SMART Technology this module and were given the opportunity to have a live virtual tour of the Amazon Fulfilment Centre. Students were introduced to the incredible technology and people who make Amazon possible. They learnt how computer science, engineering, and how people work together to fulfil customer orders at Amazon. The tour was hosted by tour leaders and combined 360-degree footage, video and live broadcasts from multiple Amazon fulfilment centres.

Many Amazon fulfilment centres span the equivalent of 28 football fields and can hold tens of millions of items on any given day. The Amazon employees pick, pack, and ship Amazon customer orders at more than 175 such facilities worldwide. To do this a combination of robotics and human input are used to ensure each parcel is delivered in the most efficient way possible.

Students also got the chance to meet and hear about the careers of three engineers who enable this technology and ask any questions about the cutting-edge technology used to check, quality assure and deliver every parcel.
