Exploring the Maths in English Literature

Have you ever wondered where the Maths is in a piece of English Literature?

What about taking it a step further and delving into the process into which the number of words and a number of letters come together are arranged together in harmony to form a story or to relate information to us in order to make us more knowledgeable about a particular subject? Every piece of literature when analysed has a particularly interesting numerical story attached to it. When you really think about it Maths is everywhere and in everything that we do!

During Maths week a group of year 7 students got the chance to do just this! Lessons started off by listening to one of the stories from the book entitled The Man Who Counted by Malba Tahan, Chapter 26: One for the Book, page 194. In this book, Beremiz was able to demonstrate his knowledge of the Koran in the following manner:

The Koran consists of 114 chapters, 70 of them dictated in Mecca and 44 of them in Medina. They are divided into 611 sections and contain 6236 verses, 7 in the first chapter and 8 in the last. The longest chapter is the second with 280 verses.

In the Koran, there are 46,439 words and 323,670 letters…

This then led to a very interesting discussion about the detailed analysis of the Koran and the possible strategies that may have been employed to get to the answer. This included making clusters of text into rectangles and finding the area. Consideration was also given to the fact as to the extent to which they themselves could give such a detailed analysis of a book that they consider to be their favourite book.

They were then given the chance to go to the library, select a book that appealed to them, and write their own analysis.

Students really enjoyed the challenge and gave some positive feedback:

“I never thought there was any maths in English so now I can see the relationship!.”

“ I will never look at a book in quite the same way again”

“I enjoyed going to the library and exploring the book differently “

“Miss, I actually concentrated and counted all the words in my book!”

It was a really good experience generally and it was fun.

Well done Year 7s! Happy Maths Week.
