Seacole

On Tuesday 21st November, 40 students in Seacole college with the highest number of reward points accumulated in Module 1, enjoyed a visit to London as part of Seacole College day celebrations. It was a day of culture, experiences and fun as they made their way through some of London’s most historic monuments and memorials. Our first stop was Nelson’s Column and students learnt about his achievements as a naval commander, most notably in the Battle of Trafalgar. We then walked down Whitehall, stopping at The Women of WWII statue, Downing Street entrance and The Cenotaph. Students had the opportunity to hear about the history and background to each building and monument and understand the significance of each location. We continued on to Parliament Street, with more stories about The Sir Winston Churchill Statue, Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. After crossing Westminster Bridge we stopped at The National Covid Memorial Wall and students had time to read the hearts and pay their respects. The wall is a visual representation of the UK's catastrophic loss to Covid-19 which stretches for 500 metres alongside the River Thames.

In 2021, we renamed da Vinci college as Seacole college, and our next stop was the famous Mary Seacole Statue at St Thomas’ Hospital. This was the first time a group of students have made the trip to see the statue our college is named after, and it served as a reminder of the values Mary Seacole demonstrated - hard work, selflessness and a determination to succeed in the face of adversity.

After walking back over Westminster Bridge, we headed towards The Mall and on to Buckingham Palace. With some lucky (although Mr Brewer  claimed ‘well planned’) timing, we walked down The Mall at the same time King Charles and Queen Camilla were leaving Buckingham Palace to meet the President of South Korea. We even got a royal wave as the car drove past us!

After that wonderful unexpected moment, we moved on to Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland where students had some free time to explore the park and go to the various fairground attractions. The long walk back to Charing Cross included both Piccadilly and Leicester Square to finish off a fantastic day enjoying the sights of London, and in particular, the chance to see the magnificent Mary Seacole statue.

Seacole College Day

On Wednesday 22nd November, in celebration of Mary Seacole's birthday, Year 7 -10 students enjoyed working in groups finding out about the life and impact of Mary Seacole. They all worked in groups displaying competitive spirits, team work and excellent recall skills, leading to Amazon reward vouchers for scoring 100%  in their quiz at the end of each session.
