Term 1, 2021 (Week 8)
Throughout this week, there are interesting things that I have learnt, like the effectiveness of creating activities that involved the 4 macro skills including word problems activities. I have also learnt that Literacy and numeracy is crucial to be embedded in the teaching and learning as they are the basis of learning for children.
First of all, I have learnt that giving students activities involve; oral questioning which require students to response in English and assigning student to work in groups where they are going to communicate in English as well as in their presentation, thus promote literacy through speaking. Letting student listen to scenario activities promote listening, assigning students to read the learning outcomes, notes and word problems activities promote reading and assigning students to write paragraphs helps their writing skills improved. By doing all these activities I could tell that help students improve their speaking, writing, reading and listening.
Moreover, throughout this week I often introduce terms to know or targeted vocabulary before we move deeper by writing their definitions using flashcards so that students would familiarize with the meaning of those words. I also often play games such as letter sound game where it allows student to play around with the sound of the letter. One of the game that I often use as my warmer is the phonic spelling when students are going to identify our topic. For example; I select 6 students to come forward and stand in line, give each student the letter and they are going to say it sounds. Student 1 letter is C, student 2 is E, students 3 is N, student 4 is S, student 5 is U and the last student is S, it is first start from student 1 until student 5. Students who are listening were going to guess what is the word.
Lastly, I have also done various type of activities which are really promoting literacy and numeracy such as giving students word problems activities and steps or instructions to follow, by doing all of these they help make them become self-sufficient problem-solvers in which they can be followed instructions to get the correct outcome.
In conclusion, literacy and numeracy are the basic tools for students’ learning. Having great skills in literacy and numeracy would help students perform better in their studies. Therefore, a teacher is required to integrate and practice literacy and numeracy in her subject she teach.
