Term 3, 2020 (Week 12)
Application of Formative and summative assessments is one of the competencies that are commonly used by teachers to show students’ learning achievement on the particular topics they have taught. There is a difference between these two assessments as Formative assessment is an ongoing activity, example; quiz, daily individual activity and etc while the summative assessment is used to evaluate students’ learning to compare it with the targeted standard and benchmark for example; Exam at the end of the term. Therefore, within this week I focused on doing aspects of this competency.
Within this week, I got a chance to help my associate teachers to design an assessment paper, this is also the time where my Mathematics teacher gave me a chance to do a blue print for our assessment paper. It was a great pleasure for me to do it as it a chance for me to recall what I have learnt from KTC, gladly it is successful and my confident in doing it is slightly developed. We develop our assessments’ questions from the learning outcomes, they totally link with the national curriculum goal.
Another thing I have done is that allowing students to work according to the marking criteria. During the special class, I often provide paragraph writing practice with vocabularies and their meaning and then allow students to use them in their paragraph writing. I also provide students with the marking rubric and allow them to consider with it, not only that but also giving them the structure of the paragraph writing and encourage them to follow it. By giving students the marking criteria to consider with it I found out that their results in their writing is improved.
Finally, as it is the last week for a revision and then the exam will be coming in the next week, therefore in a different department we are designed appropriate annual exams for term 3. This is we are assigned with different parts, as who’s going to so the multiple choice, matching, True and false and the long and short answer. These assessments were going to check student’s achievement on how far they gone in their learning from the first beginning of the term until the last week. This is very important for teachers as it gave them a chance to see their students’ weaknesses and from there they could adjust their learning activities and strategies for improvement.
