Effective communication.
This is the week where I focus on the competency effective communication, however there are various ways I used to foster effective communication to make my teaching more effective for students, such as Using the two languages (Kiribati and English) including the bilingual language in the leaning and teaching process and applying strategies that would help connect the subject content with student real life situation.
Throughout this week I often use the two languages (Kiribati and English) including the bilingual language during my delivering, this is because some of students hard to understand English. The way I used these language is that I used the English language from the beginning of our lesson until I came to the concept development I used the bilingual to discuss to concept in order to elaborate it more. By applying these I could see that it helps my students with low English proficiency easy to understand what the lesson is about and how to do it and etc as I can prove this by seeing all of my students done their work before time and they understand well the topic. Therefore, it helps students feel valued in the learning process as they learnt the topic taught delivered in both languages.
Similarly, this week I have tried to build positive relationship with my students and colleges through practicing excellent communication skills, for example the way I act and speak I tried to use words that would not affect others, from there I have learnt that it builds a strong and good relationship with my colleges especially with my students. Not only that but also I always gives positive reinforcement, for instance; If one group have done presenting their work, then I told the rest to give big three claps for that group, not only that but also I always saying positive feedback to those group members, like; thank you for your effort you have a very good presentation, and if they have some errors or mistakes I did not correct them on the spot but as when the presentation is done, then I tried to correct it without noticing. From this what I could see is that all students are wanted to participate in every activity.
And finally, throughout this week all my lesson was very interesting and motivating as it is relating with the students’ real life experienced, for example; as my health & Physical education topic is environmental problems, my mathematics topic is due with money and my social science topic is overseas employment, therefore in our lesson we learned problems student have experienced in their environment, the use of money and incomes that get from other employment and organizations. It is very interesting as instead of discussing a note from the teacher guide book I try to relate it with their real life experienced by asking student questions which are related with their own experience within their community, however there are other ideas and stories students come up with from this topic which they have come across and experienced in their community. From this it helps the lesson to make it very simple and easy for student to understand the topic as they already know and come across with them in their community and also makes the learning more memorable and they could not forget it.
