Term 1, 2021 (Week 8)
Throughout this week, I focus on the competency which is culture and tradition. I carried out this competency through integrating the lesson with culture and tradition for example; when I was talking about the topic Roles and Responsibilities in social science I related and connected it with the student own cultural roles and responsibilities at home like helping our parents cleaning the house, weaving mats, cutting toddy, etc. By making such connections between the content of the learning and the student own experience, it helps student to build bridges of meaningful between home, culture and school experiences.
Additionally, my lesson was as very motivating as it is relating with the students’ real life experienced, for example; as my health & Physical education topic is issues in the community, therefore in our lesson we learned gender based violence, and other family matters and problems like divorce and etc. It is very interesting as instead of discussing a note from the teacher guide book I try to relate it with their real life experienced by asking student questions which are related with issues they have experience in their family or in their community, however there are other ideas and stories student come up with from this topic which they have come across and experienced in their family. From this it helps the lesson to make it very simple and easy for student to understand the topic as they already know and come across them within their community.
Finally, it is also a week where I get a chance to observe how students eat their own local food, dance their own traditional way of dancing and doing home chores like what our ancestors did in the past, like weaving mat, make a local broom, weaving garland and so forth. Therefore, I’ve came to realize that cultural day is one of the most special day that remind us our uniqueness way of greeting, dancing, how we cooked our food and most of all remind us, who we are and where we originated from.
