Classroom management is one of the competencies which is about managing students’ disruptive behavior in the classroom in order to make the lesson run smoothly. Therefore, this writing would briefly discuss my research and experienced on this competency.
According to my experience, it is believed that I have done various techniques and skills which are the aspects of classroom management, such as setting up various grouping and seating arrangement like in numbers grouping methods, color code grouping method, gender balance, ability and mix-ability grouping method. By doing this strategy I found out that it is very effective as it helps the maximum amount of time in class focused on learning. For instance; what I have learnt is that once students know their seat, there is no need to organize which was really taking time; therefore the lesson was well spent. Supported by Cangelosi he believed that various Grouping method can be effectively applied while learning in classroom practices.
Similarly, praising students and correcting students’ mistake without embarrassment are other strategies I often did during my experience mostly during the group presentation. For example; when the presenter saying a wrong answer, I just correct their mistake on the spot without noticing as well as others won’t notice, after their presentation we praise them . However what I have found out is that by applying these strategies during classes, I could see that students are enhancing to participate in every learning activity especially the presentation and committed to attend every class. Supported by the article entitled Ways to encourage student mentioned that praising students is one of the most effective and easiest ways to lift their spirits and keep them working hard.
Furthermore, Setting up classroom rules and time-out corners are other aspects of classroom management. These are common strategies I had managed to apply them during my experience and I was involving students to set up their own classroom rules and time-out corner. What I have learnt here is that by having a classroom rules and time out corner, it controls students’ mischievous behavior as they are very strict on their own rules. For instance; one of our classroom rules that my students are very strict on is that when you are playing and talking during class you will be sent to the time out corner and will be fined 50 cent as well just for the contribution to our classroom’s need, like broom and etc. (Please refer to the journal). This rule is very effective as it really convert disobeyed student into obedient ones. As supported by the article entitled Handbook for Classroom Management That Work it says that by having a classroom rules give students the structure they need and also help them feel that the classroom is a safe and predictable place.
Finally, displaying of teaching aids with student’s work at learning corners is another aspect of classroom management, this strategy is very crucial because it alter a classroom into a learning room, it also very helpful to student as by seeing their own activities displayed on different corners it enable them recall what they just had studied few days or weeks ago. But of most of all it conveyed a message to students that all their ideas and work are not rejected but appreciated or welcomed that is why they are displayed on learning corners. Overall it encouraged students to love attending school in their entire school life. Supported by Beth Griesmer she mentioned that displaying student work is important as it helped students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when they see their work displayed.
