Application of Formative and summative assessments is one of the competencies that are commonly used by teachers to show students’ learning achievement on the specific topic they have taught. There is a difference between these two assessments as Formative assessment is an ongoing activity, example; quiz, daily individual activity and etc while the summative assessment is used to evaluate students’ learning to compare it with the targeted standard and benchmark for example; Exam at the end of the term. Therefore, during my teaching experience, I have done applying formative and summative assessment through various activities.
Designing and administering assignments, quizzes, test and homework to students are type of activities that I often did to test students understanding and knowledge on topic we covered as well as topic we have learnt (refer to the journal). By doing all of these kinds of activities, I could see that they are very effective as it gave students their time to recall what they have learnt previously during tests or quizzes and also help students to learn further by carrying out researches on the task they are given as their assignment or homework. Most of all it is very effective for teachers as it gave them time to evaluate their students’ performance, achievements and progresses throughout learning process. Supported by (Alber. R, 2014) he mentioned that it is very important for teachers to strategize effective assessment tools that could enable them to evidently prove students’ learning achievement and give appropriate and effective level of supports that would eventually push students’ learning progress.
Finally, I have learnt that providing an ongoing feedback through written comments and giving feedback verbally is one of the formative assessments components. I usually did this strategy when assessing students’ learning on the topic we learnt and what we have already covered through marking my students’ activities followed by giving constructive feedback. What I came to realize after doing this is that it is very effective to me as a teacher as it enables myself to easily know what areas my students need to improve on, and that is really helpful to me when designing another lesson for my students but most importantly it is very effective for my student as it helps them learn effectively where it enables them to know their weaknesses and strengths in the learning process. As supported by (Nicol & Dick) they believed that giving students feedback on their performance, enable them to restructure their understanding/skills and build more powerful ideas and capabilities.
