Developing of assessment is considered as one of the competencies which is very essential for teachers as it is a tool to measure students’ achievement in the learning. This competency could be carried out through developing of exams, giving students the marking rubric and carrying out short test and quizzes that are aligned with specific learning outcomes. Therefore, this writing would be going to demonstrate aspects of this competency I have done during my teaching experience.
Firstly, introducing a marking rubric to students is one of aspects of this competency I have done during my teaching experience (refer to the journal). This strategy is very effective where I used it for assessing my students’ progress in their learning. In relation with my experience, I usually distribute marking criteria on the paragraph writing (refer to the rubric) before and after testing my students’ paragraph writing in the social science subject to enable students know what areas or topics they have to be tested on and to see how far they gone in those areas. This strategy is very effective as it promotes self-assessment where they could develop skills reflecting and exploring new insights and also enable to self-correct themselves. Supported by Koshy, 2009 he state that allowing students to consider with the marking criteria able to evaluate themselves and it also aids in peer evaluation.
Another important component of this competency I have done during my teaching experience is that carrying out tests with my students. I usually carrying out short test and quiz when a particular topic is finished to test how far my students gone with topics they have learnt. As supported by Lynch 2018 she mentioned the purpose of carrying out test is the pathway of gathering relevant information about student performance or progress. Therefore, this component is very effective as it has enabled myself to measure my students’ capabilities, thus help me to adjust the learning activities toward their weaknesses after analyzing their results.
Finally, designing an exam at the end of the term is one of the aspects of this competency I have learnt during my teaching experience. This is where we assigned by our HOD to develop our exam questions from learning outcomes that were extracted from the syllabus that students were going to be tested on. These exams have helped me out in assessing my students’ progress in their learning, and also it has enhanced my confident in developing an exam questions that link with the National curriculum. As supported by George Lucas) he believed that having the ability to test your students’ performance would help a you to promote a better and successful.
