Introducing literacy and numeracy in the lesson is very essential as it have great impact to a child’s academic performance. It is believed that it is one of the competencies which very crucial as it based on developing and improving students’ English and Mathematics which are the main keys that would help develop students’ overall progression.
First of all, creating activities that involved the 4 macro skills which are reading, writing, speaking and listening are really embedded literacy. I really believed this aspect because during my experience I have done activities which involved the 4 macro skills and I have learnt that they really improved their literacy. This activities includes; oral questioning which require students to response in English and assigning student to work in groups which require them to communicate in English as well as their presentation, thus promote literacy through speaking. Letting student listen to scenario activities promote listening, assigning students to read the learning outcomes, notes and word problems activities promote reading and assigning students to write paragraphs helps their writing skills improved. Introducing terms to know or targeted vocabulary lessons by writing their definitions using flashcards (refer to the picture) and playing games such as letter sound game where it allows student to play around with the sound of the letter (refer to the journal). Supported by Lorena Manaj Sadiku she stated that activities fomenting the student's reading, writing, listening and oral skills serve many valuable purposes, they give learners scaffolded support, opportunities to create and use real-information, evidence of their own ability and most important, confidence.
Similarly, according to my experience I’ve come to understand that giving students activities which involved word problems and following the instruction or the given procedure in any Mathematics topics really promote both numeracy and literacy (Refer to the evidence) . According to Bruner (1995) stated that the instruction is very essential in leading the leaner through the sequence of statements that increase the learner’s ability to grasp, transform and transfer what he/she is learning. Therefore, teaching students to follow the given instruction is the key to make them become self-sufficient problem-solvers in which they can be followed instructions to get the correct outcome.
Furthermore, doing survey and investigation on the topic enumeration is another way that promotes literacy and numeracy. It is an activity that requires students to do the recording of data where they are going to count and record the number of transport on South Tarawa that run on the road (refer to the picture). From their findings, then construct a graph after that then analyzed their findings in short paragraph. Supported by Kim Beswick he believed that in order to promote students' numeracy and literacy, a teacher should involve numbers and writings in the lessons. Therefore allowing students to do the survey on the topic they learned is very essential as it enable them to prove what they have learnt, and most of all help them improve their numeracy and literacy.
In conclusion, student would never learn literacy and numeracy if teachers are not integrating or practices this component properly in their subject they teach. Therefore teachers should have great skills in literacy and numeracy in the teaching and learning process so that students would perform better in their studies.
