The Global Citizenship (G.C) program at the International School of Phnom Penh (ISPP) seeks to cultivate caring, principled, and responsible global citizens. Through service-based initiatives, students engage with local and global communities, fostering understanding and empowerment to create meaningful change. Guided by principles of sustainability and ethical action, the program emphasizes leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking as essential tools for community engagement.
Aligned with ISPP's mission — Inspire Learning, Nurture Community, Build a Better Future — students learn through active engagement with their community, reflect on local challenges and connections to global trends, and collaboratively create solutions. By integrating learning with real-world applications, G.C nurtures a sense of community and commitment to building a better future, both locally and globally. Students, especially those in the upper grades, are often self-initiating activities that range from semester-long events to sustainable, long-term relationships and initiatives.
The G.C program bridges the ISPP community with diverse local and international partner organizations, emphasizing mutual learning, cultural exchange and sustainable relationships. Projects address pressing issues like poverty, education, and environmental sustainability, linking classroom learning to real-world challenges. This approach nurtures international-mindedness, encouraging students to view themselves as active contributors to a global society.
The G.C program immerses students in Cambodia’s social and cultural context. Activities such as language, art, mathematics, swimming and collaborative problem-solving projects enable students to connect with their local community, fostering empathy and understanding. Service opportunities are designed to go beyond charity, promoting long-term, ethical, and impactful relationships.
Global Citizenship complements ISPP’s curriculum by integrating with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) in the Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12). Our approach to Global Citizenship enhances MYP subject learning through hands-on application, and encourages students to initiate projects aligned with their interests and academic strengths.
The program evolves as students progress:
Grades 6 – 8: Participate in structured activities, learning through guided projects and exposure to Cambodian culture.
Grade 8: In the Semester Two, they participate in ‘Project Change’, a small group collaborative project that asks students to identify an issue in their community and propose effective solutions.
Grades 9 – 10: 9 Students take part in a semester based leaderships course (Grade 9), lead G.C initiatives, applying leadership, creative and critical thinking skills.
Grades 11 – 12: Individualised CAS projects build on earlier experiences, encouraging independent service initiatives.
The G.C program for Grades 6 - 10 takes place each Friday afternoon. The program aims to provide students with the opportunity to connect with service and action based initiatives in order to meet service requirements of the IBMYP. G.C is a core element of ISPP’s curriculum, with all students in Grades 6 - 10 engaged in a range of activities for the full duration of their MYP experience. Every learner can expect to develop the skills and perspective needed to contribute responsibly to their communities and the broader world, while at ISPP and beyond.
Service Based Learning and Creativity, Activity, and Servivce (CAS)
ISPP has an active Service Programme across the school and students engage in initiatives connected to and in addition to their curriculum. Based on an individual student's approach to service or choice of activity, students may take part in initiatives that require participation beyond the school day which may take place outside of the ISPP campus. When students are involved in such an activity, the leading teacher will communicate in advance about all of the logistics of the activity, so parents are well informed. For students in Grades 11 and 12, Friday afternoons are dedicated to Creativity, Activitity, and Service (CAS). This is a core component of the IB Diploma Programme, and a graduation requirement of the ISPP High School Diploma.
