This term Year 6 have enjoyed listening to live music and the choir from the secondary school.
You to me are everything
By listening to the song You to me are everything by The Real Thing – a British soul group formed in the 1970s, we have learnt to explore the key musical features of this track and develop an understanding of the term ‘cover version’.
We learnt to :
Listen and appraise, recognising and identifying key musical features such as rhythm, tempo, timbre, structure, and instruments.
Use music vocabulary and knowledge to discuss similarities and differences in pieces of music.
Learn some simple choreography to accompany a disco song.
With inspiration from South African music, we have learnt the rhythm, melody, dance and words from the Throw Catch song.
NC - play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression.
For our 'Hey, Mr Miller' lessons we have enjoyed:
Listening to In the Mood by Glenn Miller, noticing the instruments and how they are played.
Embody the rhythms of the solo instruments through movement.
Learnt the first two sections of the song Hey, Mr Miller.
Sing and play a class arrangement of the song with a good sense of ensemble.
Listened to historical recordings of big band swing and describe features of the music using music vocabulary.
NC - appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
- develop an understanding of the history of music.
Our parents came to watch the final performance at the cathedral.
NC - play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
We were fortunate to take part in a Christmas Carol Concert at Rochester Cathedral. Along with 10 other schools, the Medway Music Association arranged for us to rehearse and sing all the carols we have been practising this Module - from Away in a Manger to Once in Royal David's City. Our favourite was 'Midnight'.
We enjoyed an assembly from Rock Steady to show us how to play the electric guitar, drums and keyboard. We all enjoyed singing along to a song at the end, with our band playing all the the instruments.
Happy
In Module 1 we have focused on listening and appraising different songs relating to the theme of 'Happy'. Our first song was by Pharell Williams; after listening we discussed:
How does the song make you feel?
Does the song tell a story?
What does the song make you think of?
How old do you think this piece of music is?
During our appraisal of the song we considered if the tempo stayed the same all the way through the song; the dynamics in the song (how loud or quiet it was); we identified the different instruments (keyboard, bass and drums) as well as how clapping acts as an additional instrument. The style was pop with some soul influences, which we enjoyed performing in class. We discussed the structure of the song:
Introduction, Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge - section A, Bridge - section B, Chorus, Chorus
Bridge - section B, Chorus.
The hook is in the bridge sections: "Happy, happy, happy, happy..." and the chorus has a hook too: "Because I'm happy..." or "Clap along if..."
We listened and appraised the following songs in different styles:
● Happy by Pharrell Williams
● Top Of The World sung by The Carpenters
● Don’t Worry, Be Happy sung by Bobby McFerrin
● Walking On Sunshine sung by Katrina And The Waves
● When You’re Smiling sung by Frank Sinatra
