Module 1
Local Study - Chatham Dockyard
Chatham Dockyard, which was built in 1618, is the focus of our local study for history. I have researched the dockyard and can explain that it was built to support the Royal Navy after a series of trade wars with the Dutch in the 17th Century. Many significant ships and submarines were built at the dockyard, including the Ocelot, Sunne and Victory. In the past, the population of Chatham has increased rapidly, with the dockyard having a direct impact on the Medway Towns and the employment levels.
Chatham Dockyard was establish as a Royal Navy Dockyard in 1618. It was incredibly important during the 17th century - during the Dutch Raids - but was then utilised more as a ship building and repair dockyard.

During the Dutch Raids, we learnt that the Dutch sailed down the Medway River towards Chatham. Although the Dutch captured the King's ship, they did not reach the dockyard itself, where significant damage could have been inflicted.
