Ms. Houlihan was our Enterprise teacher.
This class is specifically orientated towards TY's, as this year we have to become entrepreneurs (start businesses) and make an innovative product.
My group members are Órla, Keelin, Taylor and Leah.
So far, the Marketplace that's held in the gym is going ahead. This is where we display and sell our product.
To prepare us for this, we had zoom calls with many people who are part of the LCETB and Student Enterprise Ireland.
We took notes on how to work as a team, group leader skills and sales.
Our chosen products are going to be baking boxes. These boxes will contain all the dry ingredients necessary to make brownies or cookies, all one must do is add an egg or butter.
Here is a worksheets we completed in class too that helped us understand what being an entrepreneur is all about:
An entrepreneur I chose to research was Rosanna Purcell
Term Two was an extremely busy period for us! We had our idea, ordered all our products, spend time bagging and labelling ingredients, constructing cardboard boxes, sanitising as we went and taking over 200 orders! We also have made advancements on social media platforms to spread the word about our company; Batters & Crumbs. Let me guide you through our journey...
We sent out a survey to the student body, teachers and in our Instagram so we could see what recipes people were interested in buying!
Gathering from our survey results, we found that people were interested in buying brownies and cookies. Now, all we had to do was the tedious manual work, and our end goal was in sight - to sell over 100 boxes!

Instagram is a great way to promote our products, as our friends and family members can support us and spread the word using Instagram's story sharing technique.
We can also communicate avidly with anyone using the in-chat feature.
We post various things; such as reels detailing step-by-step guidelines on cooking, polls, tips and a link to our survey.
We also like to take some time out to thank customers on our main story.

The finalised product!
We managed to sell over 200 boxes, and just before the Christmas holidays too!
We each received over 150 euros, as accounted for by our company manager - Keelin.
We are currently taking a well deserved break over the holidays, and will precede again when we return to school; beginning term three.
We finished up term two on the 18th o December. We were supposed to return to school on the 6th of January, however the Government, along with the advisory of NPHET, decided it would not be categorically safe.
We needed to adjust to these unprecedented times and remain in contact with our fellow team members. We suggested the idea of communicating via Google Meets as well as Whatsapp.
The Marketplace (in our school) is unequivocally postponed until it is deemed safe to hold.
However, some hope remains for the arrangement of the Limerick Finals. They are going to take place virtually, on the 16th of March. Normally, the team(s) that win at the market place, would then go ahead to the Limerick Finals but because we have no marketplace, the 3 student enterprise teachers are going to meet (virtually) in the next couple of days to pick 2/3 groups from all of the TY groups to represent the school.
So, Ms. Houlihan has been in contact with us through email, and would gladly accept our applications to represent our school!
With that being said, we have to collaborate and create a report that comprises of our skills, qualities, influences etc - basically everything our team is about! This must be submitted to our enterprise teachers before they decide which teams may go through.
We were ecstatic to discover that the enterprise teachers choose our company to go through to the Limerick finals!
Along with Pádraig O'Regan's company and 'Crackers & Co.', all of us will be attending a zoom meeting with Gary Lowe of Student Enterprise Ireland. Here, we will be given the opportunity to pitch our idea, answer questions and ask Gary for advice on any issues we have to date.
When we return to school (possibly in mid-March), our company will be up-and-running yet again, making our boxes and attracting even more customers!
Our latest Instagram post, informing our followers on our activity!
We will be back in action sometime soon :(
But for now, we have learned how to adapt to our current situation!
Zoom call with Gary Lowe of Student Enterprise - he elucidated the criteria essential for our business report and answered any relevant queries.
Gary outlined that we needed to create a video outlining our product/service, production, marketing and teamwork. This video then has to be sent to him - via Dropbox - including our report and permission forms.
Letter of permission, for my appearance in our video to be used
Dispatching our boxes would have been challenging during these times. With stringent movement rules and avoiding vulnerable people, denied us the opportunity to sell to more people. However, we came up with an idea that was feasible and within 5 km of our homes. We asked our local shops if they would consider displaying and selling our boxes, in which they would be offered a percentage of our profits. We sold to Moloney's in Broadford, Dolan's in Ballygran, O'Sullivan's Forecourt in Feohanagh and Coughlan's in Castlemahon.
Here is a picture of our boxes in Dolan's.
These achievements are very beneficial for our business, as we do not have to withhold sales while in lock down.
Here is a screenshot of us performing the intro to our business video.
We were ecstatic to find we placed third at senior level in the Limerick finals!!!!!
Here is a screenshot of our Instagram, channelling the fantastic news!
It has been an amazing year for us! We have sold hundreds of baking boxes, and learned so many useful skills along the way!
I am very grateful for the time and effort Ms. Houlihan put in to aid us in our journey, as well as the relentless support exasperated by peers and teachers.
Sadly, we have decided to terminate our business as the school year draws to a close.
I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Student Enterprise class proved that becoming an entrepreneur is not difficult if you have the determination, enthusiasm and resources to create a product or company that expands you horizons.
