Keelin, Grace and I organised an Irish Guide Dogs event in our school for first years - transition years.
After participating and completing in an online course over lockdown, we wanted to raise money for IGD, as only 15% of their funds come from government funding.
With the challenges that coincide with coronavirus, the staff at IDG have been continuing to maintain the highest quality of care towards the dogs, and have been passionately comforting and obliging to give up their time to host talks.
I learned that guide dogs act not only as a mobility aid but also as a constant support providing both safety and social benefits.
We decided to host the fundraiser as close as possible to the Irish Guide Dog day, (May 7th).
Each student would be required to bring in two euros, and wear their P.E uniform.
I asked Ms.Phelan to post an email on all the P.E Google classrooms the night before as a reminder for staff and students.
We also hung up many posters around the school building, as well as timetable so classes can view their entry times.
Our main aim was to make sure everyone had fun, but realise that having a guide mitigates the struggle and challenges encountered daily by IGD recipients.
Overall, the day went swimmingly as remarked by teachers and students,
We managed to raise over 620 euros!!!! The three of us enlisted the help of Mr.Burke to write a cheque for IGD, sign it and post it.
I am very glad I had the opportunity to co-manage such a spectacular event in my school. I hope every participant can continue to convey the importance of the IGD association and their roles in society.
