Politics

Investigating Paulo Freire’s theories
  • For Politics, we had Mr.Farrell. We had many open discussions about our Irish Government and the running of our country.

  • We predominantly talked about the Leaving Cert, and how it is a system based on Paulo Freire's concept of 'banking' information.

  • I agree with Freire's theories, so I decided to do a PowerPoint presentation on him to obtain my credits.

  • We explored sociology; learning about different sociologists and their beliefs. Here are some of the sociologists we discovered;

What is sociology? - Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions.

John Locke

Locke defended the claim that men are by nature free and equal against claims that God had made all people naturally subject to a monarch.

Karl Marx

Marx predicted that capitalism produced internal tensions like previous socio-economic systems and that those would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system known as the socialist mode of production.

Thomas Hobbes

Hobbes viewed government primarily as a device for ensuring collective security. Political authority is justified by a hypothetical social contract among the many that vests in a sovereign person or entity the responsibility for the safety and well-being of all.

Émile Durkheim

Durkheim believed that society exerted a powerful force on individuals. People's norms, beliefs, and values make up a collective consciousness, or a shared way of understanding and behaving in the world.

karl marx

  • We watched a video which outlines Marx's ideologies and lifestyle.
