Term one

For English class with Mr. Finn, we are composing a General Vision or Viewpoint essay. This entails writing an introduction, list the texts we have studied, their authors/directors/playwrights and refer to the question. We have studied Lies of Silence, Dancing at Lughnasa and Brooklyn. Just before term one ended, we watched the introduction of the film Brooklyn. Here is a picture of my essay;

Brooklyn - directed by John Crowley

  • Young Irish immigrant Eilis Lace (Saoirse Ronan) navigates her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother's home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her past disrupts her new vivacity, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

To help us prepare this essay, we brainstormed ideas and wrote them into columns;

  • We watched the movie Sing Street, and a video of a modern poet called Emmett Kirwan, reciting his poem Heartbreak.
