Counselor Corner
WOW Time - January:
This month during our monthly counseling class, students are learning about having a Growth Mindset. This is the idea that with hard work and practice we can improve our knowledge and skills. This can be a hard concept for magnet students who learn things quickly and are easily frustrated when things become difficult.
Check out this article on Growth Mindset Parenting for more information.
Parenting Tips:
Here are some ways to encourage a Growth Mindset at home:
Praise your child for their curiosity and effort given, not their ability. "I love how persistent you were with learning that game. You didn't give up!"
Welcome setbacks and mistakes as learning opportunities. Encourage them to take a break, calm down, and approach the task later.
Teach your child a mantra to use when they feel frustrated and want to quit. "I can do hard things! I can figure this out. I will keep going. I want to learn this!"
Model a growth mindset in your own life. Talk to them about challenges that came up in your day and how you pushed past them, rather than giving up.
Watch DOGS & MOMS:
We want to say a HUGE thank you to the Watch DOGS and Watch MOMS that have volunteered with us so far!
We have more openings for Watch DOG volunteers this semester! We'd love to have you spend the day with us!
