Counselor Corner
Social-Emotional Learning:
This month we are starting to learn about our 4th Mindset: 100% Accountable. Our students are learning how to take responsibility for their own happiness and success. They are learning about being responsible for their thoughts, feelings, choices, and actions. Our weekly lessons will focus on recognizing our fears and excuses and focusing our energy on taking critical steps toward reaching our goals.
Check out two of our morning lessons here: Week 18 & Week 19.
Parenting Tips:
Here are some tips for modeling personal accountability. It is important to talk to our students plainly and clearly about how we grow as people.
Show your child that you take responsibility for your actions. Talk to them about how you use your time to do things that energize you and fulfill you.
Show your child how you take ownership of your personal growth. Talk to them about the routines you do that make you stronger and get the most out of your day (i.e. working out, reading, cooking, etc).
Don't blame or hold bad feelings towards others. Show your child that when we hold onto anger, we cannot move forward to live our best lives.
Don't make excuses. When we make excuses, our children learn to make excuses. Show your child that we achieve more when we don't limit ourselves with excuses.
5th Grade Parents:
Don't forget that it is time to choose your student's middle school in Skyward
The first form is the Magnet Application form, if you would like your child to be in a magnet program and they have the scores for eligibility. The Magnet Application is open from Jan. 8 - Jan. 19.
The second form is the Choice of School form if your child will be attending a neighborhood school. The Choice of School form is open from Jan. 8 - Feb. 16.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Sinclair, your School Counselor, for help! alsincla@garlandisd.net.
