Electronic Devices

The purpose of educational technology at FIS is to enhance students’ academic experiences. To this end, FIS has designed a Student Technology Policy based on best practices from schools around the world as well as lessons learned during our pilot program here at FIS. This policy is designed to make sure that the FIS infrastructure is being used safely and respectfully while still allowing students sufficient access to technology throughout the school day.

Technology

Secondary students are required to have their own devices at school. Students and teachers use the Google Suite daily (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Classroom, etc.) to communicate and collaborate.

Electronic Device Use

All students may use smartphones and similar devices on campus, provided the following conditions are met:

  • The student is being supervised by a teacher.

  • The device does not distract the student or disrupt the class.

Secondary students who arrive to class early may use that time to send or receive e-mails or text messages. Students may not use their devices in the hallways, bathrooms, or other public spaces between classes; However, they may use their devices at lunchtime, break time and after school.

  • Secondary students may not access FIS wireless networks without having signed the acceptable use policy.

  • Grade 6-12 students are required to bring their own computers. During academic periods, Grade 6-12 students may use their computers in classrooms or in the library, even when direct supervision is not available.

  • Grade 6-12 students are not allowed to use any electronic device in the lower lobby during recess and lunch.

Misuse of phones will mean the student will be asked to collect it from the business office at the end of the day. The constant misuse of the phones will be recorded and repeated incidences will result in the phone being transferred to a secure location until a parent comes to school to collect it. In the case of multiple failures to meet this requirement, parents will be asked to meet with the Principal before they can collect the phone.
