Emergency Procedures

The safety and security of all students is our top priority and all actions taken will reflect this. The Emergency Procedures Handbook covers the procedures for many different types of emergencies and is updated on an annual basis. Our plans are informed by best practice in other international schools, advice from the US State Department’s guidelines for international schools, as well as the local city and prefectural authorities.

In an emergency situation it is natural to want information as quickly as possible. FIS provides the community with the maximum amount of information that is possible and appropriate depending upon the kind of emergency and other constraints (i.e. legal dictates, security, emotional well-being of those involved) as quickly as possible.

Earthquake and Fire

In the case of a fire or earthquake, where it becomes necessary to leave the building, there is a detailed process in place to ensure the safety of all students and adults in the building. Students and staff exit the premises to a safe location outside of the FIS grounds (see the Emergency Procedures Handbook). The school will communicate with parents through email, bulletin on the website and/or SMS after the emergency has been resolved. In the case of any emergency, please do not come to school and wait for communication from the school.

A Phase 2 Emergency, requires the pick up of all students from a parent/guardian from the Phase 2 site. This communication will come through email, a bulletin on the website and/or SMS. The school is equipped with emergency supplies (food, water, first aid) for the entire school in case the students and staff cannot be picked up.

Phase 3 is where the students and staff evacuate to a recognized city shelter.  If this should happen the school will communicate with parents through email, bulletin on the website and SMS.

In order for us to contact you quickly it is important that parents always inform the school of any change in telephone numbers and email addresses.

Natural Disasters

Generally, FIS will be closed whenever local education authorities close their own schools due to such emergencies as typhoons, transportation strikes, etc. Please note that under Board Policy the school may close for up to five days per year. No refund is given for the days the school is closed.
