Educational Technology Policy
This policy has been designed to ensure that the FIS infrastructure is being used safely and respectfully, while still allowing students sufficient access to technology throughout the school day.
Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to the following technology resources:
FIS-owned resources such as:
Computers, tablets, or similar devices and their peripherals;
User accounts for online applications or services;
FIS wireless networks;
Accessories such as cables, cameras, microphones, and headphones.
Non-FIS resources used on campus or during the school day, such as:
Smartphones, smart watches or similar devices
Personal laptops or tablets.
To use FIS technology resources or non-FIS resources on campus or during the school day, students need permission from parents or legal guardians, which will be granted by signing the Student and Parent/Guardian Technology Agreement. This will be provided during the enrollment process.
FIS students will receive some instruction on appropriate use by their teachers and the IT administrator(s); however, students are expected to understand and comply with this policy whether or not they have received such instruction. Students and parents are encouraged to ask questions about this policy.
FIS Student Technology Policy
School Privacy
School equipment, accounts, and infrastructure are the property of FIS. Students have no expectation of privacy for any activity involving an FIS technological device or technology resource. This includes actions taken through personal accounts from FIS computers, or on FIS accounts from personal computers. The school is allowed to examine student accounts at any time. In special circumstances, parents may view their child’s computer records by requesting an appointment with the Head of School.
Online Privacy
Students should abide by school privacy policies and protect private information such as the name, age, address, telephone number, and other identifying information of themselves and other members of the FIS community.
Students must never meet in person people they only know through the Internet. If students are approached by strangers through the internet, they must report this to an appropriate teacher or supervising adult.
Student Witnesses
If students see other students engaging in any activity that appears unsafe or that appears to threaten privacy, students must notify an appropriate teacher or supervising adult.
Students who do not use technology appropriately may lose their FIS technology privileges or may face other consequences as defined by their Division Principal as part of each division’s overall behavior management plan.
