Duration: 2:02

Icon: hands-on activity

How to play:

  • Write the numbers from 1 to 10 (for example) on a piece of paper or use cards to set the number range.

  • Ask the other player (the ‘secret holder’) to choose a secret number within your given range.

  • Guess the ‘secret' holder’s number.

  • They will tell you whether their number is greater or less than your guess.

  • Try to guess the secret number in the fewest number of guesses possible, or, with only 3 guesses.

Example – playing using the range 1 to 8

Cards numbered from 1 to 8, lined up in order. The same amount of blocks are above e.g. 1 block is above the number 1 and so on.

After playing 'Guess my number':

  • What is an effective strategy to guess the number quickly?

  • If you played the game again tomorrow, what would you do differently? Why?

Divide and drive

Let's watch an episode of 'Numberblocks'!

  • move heavily around the room like an elephant or lightly like a ladybird

You will need:

  • two different paint colours

  • a potato cut in half or a sponge

  • paper

  • black pencil or pen

  • ruler

  • space to move around.

As you listen to or sing the nursery rhyme:

  • move around the room saying 'gallop' and then try 'trotting'

  • mime rocking a baby to sleep and then marching steadily like a soldier

  • use a sponge or potato with paint on it to show the way you were moving.

Humpty Dumpty

Duration: 15:18

Does your printmaking look like the picture?

Example of printmaking using a potato or a sponge

For those who like a challenge!

  • Think about how you were moving. You might have noticed a pattern of 'long, short' for 'gallop' and an even 'short, short' for 'trotting'.

  • How does this remind you of the artwork ‘Composition with red, blue and yellow’ (1930) by Mondrian with its patterns and shapes?

  • Make another artwork using different sizes of squares just like Mondrian used. You will need to use a ruler to make your lines straight, a black pencil and some textas if you have them.

What patterns and shapes can you see?
