Guess my number
Duration: 2:02

Icon: hands-on activity

How to play:

  • Write the numbers from 1 to 10 (for example) on a piece of paper or use cards to set the number range.

  • Ask the other player (the ‘secret holder’) to choose a secret number within your given range.

  • Guess the ‘secret' holder’s number.

  • They will tell you whether their number is greater or less than your guess.

  • Try to guess the secret number in the fewest number of guesses possible, or, with only 3 guesses.

Example – playing using the range 1 to 8

Cards numbered from 1 to 8, lined up in order. The same amount of blocks are above e.g. 1 block is above the number 1 and so on.

After playing 'Guess my number' answer these questions:

  • What is a good strategy to guess the number quickly?

  • If you played the game again tomorrow, what would you do differently? Why?

Example of printmaking using a potato or a sponge

For those who like a challenge!

  • Think about how you were moving. You might have noticed a pattern of 'long, short' for 'gallop' and an even 'short, short' for 'trotting'.

  • Does this remind you of the artwork ‘Composition with red, blue and yellow’ (1930) by Mondrian with its patterns and shapes?

What patterns and shapes can you see?
